This course will discuss various statistics topics with strong links to geoscience applications through reading assignments, paper presentations, and discussions. The topics include spatio-temporal modeling, non-Gaussian and skew-t distributions, Bayesian hierarchical models, Kalman filter, Ensemble Kalman filter and related methods. These topics will discussed in the context of geoscience applications such as precipitation models, data assimilation, El Nino prediction, and paleoclimatic records.
